Blog Post 13: Audience Research

What is a target audience?

In this blog post I will be discussing the following questions that I have researched about the importance of target audience in the film industry.

What is an audience?

All media texts are made with an audience in mind and so include different types of content. This is because the audience are the consumers and it is essentially down to them whether or not the product is successful. Different media texts attract different types of audiences whether it is down to their age range, ethnicity, gender or hobbies.

How do we define a target audience?

A target audience is a specific group of people that a product is aimed towards and aims to attract:

Primary - These are the primary consumers and the main audience that the producers are aiming to attract to their product. This could be a science fiction fan going to see a science fiction film.

Secondary - These are the secondary consumers which means that the product might not necessarily be targeted towards them but they may consumer the product through a friend. This could be going to watch a film with a family member or friend.

Tertiary - These are the tertiary consumers who will most likely not be interested in the product but may still purchase it or go see it because of their knowledge about it. For example, someone may go see a film because of an actor that stars in the film, but not the genre.
