The purpose of a title sequence (4)
A title sequence is defined as: the method by which films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound.
Often the purpose of a title sequence is to act as an introduction for the theme of the film.
A title sequence can play a crucial part in a setting the tone of the film, whether it's a thriller, horror or crime. Typically the camera shots, editing, lighting, etc. work as clues for the audience on what to expect to see in the film. For example, with Thriller films' title sequences there us often the establishing shot which would usually be a low-angle shot of a house. This is for the purpose of making the house look big and in return intimidating and scary. The lighting in horrors and thrillers is often dim or harshly focused on a particular character or thing. This therefore, successfully sets the tone of the film for the audience as they know to expect a sense of danger and fear in the world of the film.
Also, the title sequence acts a space to give credits to cast, crew, directors, editors, etc. It is a good way to put this information in while also engaging the audience and entertaining them. An essential part of the film are the credits so the title sequence allows for the production team to be creative when playing them.
Furthermore, the title sequence is of significance because it helps the production team structure the film without missing any important information.
