However, i wanted to take my understanding even further. Below i have analysed two different title sequences.
*Title Sequences Analysis
The first Title Sequence that i watched was called the Black Swan:In this title sequence we see thick white sheets that are moving with bits of text around them.
Then in this short, opening Title Sequence, we see women dancing around in ballet dresses. We get many closeup shots of the ballet dancers dancing around which was really effective. What was even more effective was the use of blood.
Throughout the entire intro, the theme of blood being spilt is constantly shown. We see text with names being spelt with blood. We see blood on the dresses of the ballet dancers, especially when it is zoomed in.
The editor decided to blur the background in the title sequence and then focus on the ballet dancer with tons of blood on his dress.-This helps set the scene of some sort of tragedy?
The music is very graceful at the start but ten the violin starts going crazy.
The classic theme of the music in contrast with the blood on the ballet dancers also helps set the scene of tragedy.
An important factor to point out is the graceful dancers in contrast to the blood on the material, it is very contradictory and goes against the gracefulness.
The stepfather:
In the title sequence the stepfather it easily sets out the foundations to what we are to expect for the rest of the film!
It starts off with casual music of a delivery boy passing papers around the neighbourhood. This first gives off the impression that it is a generic neighbourhood with nothing too daunting to expect.
We then get a scene where a man is covered in bod-including the face.
This is very effective as to contrast to this is him acting normal whilst cleaning the red substance.
-Along side all of this is very eerie music to give off the impression of something very terrible.
We then witness the male shave with his readily set out (red tinted-contrasting to the theme of blood) shaving equipment.
He shaves all of his facial hair, puts on contact lenses and at the end looks completely different.
He then packs his stuff which adds a sense of mystery to why exactly is he changing is identity and then 'up-and-atoming'
Soon after, the music changes to a Christmas carol.
After seeing lovely pictures of his family, it cuts back and forth from him making breakfast, dead bodies of his family members, then him eating the breakfast numerous times. The fact that the music is of Christmas carols, and the whole theme of the house is Christmas yet he has killed his family just adds to the creepiness of this step father.
In addition, the screenwriter deliberately uses the work of contrapuntal sound. This is when the sound and the images do not add up- which is exactly done here to create an Eerie and sinister feeling.
