Blog post 42: The Pitch

Here is our final pitch prezi along with the feedback we received from our classmates and teacher. Each group member contributed at least 3 frames from the prezi in order to ensure that we all put an equal amount of effort into it.

First day filming

26TH NOVEMBER 2016 - FIRST DAY FILMING

On saturday, our group got together to begin filming for our title sequence, we were able to follow our production schedule as closely as possible, however we didn't have enough time to visit all the locations however during filming we were able to find other locations to film that we felt would be appropriate for our title sequence. We originally met up in finsbury park and then began to make our way to Omars home to help him collect the equipment. We felt as if it was best if omar kept the equipment as he is seen as the most careful out of our group. As we all began to make our way to crouch end, we found a appropriate location beside a park, we then began to film this as we felt that if we incorporated this into our title sequence it would make our title sequence appear more eerie and less artificial as our plan was to only film made made building such as churches.

We took mundane shots such as inside a dry cleaners, parks, diners, anything that would suggest we were in the Bible belt region in America.

We then took a break at 2 o clock to eat and have lunch, and whilst this happened we were able to look over the shots we took and create new ideas of how this would all be edited together as well as having new suggestions of wear to film.

We then began to make our way to crouch end as omar suggested it would be a good place to film as there was a modern church in this location, we took various images of me running and begins filmed as i do so (this is due to the fact i have blonde hair and the plot revolves around our antagonist hunting witches with blonde hair), we also found a large painting on one of the walls, although the painting would suggest something friendly (this painting was beside a nursery, no children were filmed) we thought that with a negative filter this would oppose the friendly message. We also found another church beside the one we were already at, we were able to filmed the stained glass, we also asked if we could film inside the church, and thankfully we were, we were able to get a large amount of footage here, luckily enough we filmed this in the evening so there was no one in the church either.

External Research

External Research and First Hand Photos

In preparation for our pitch on Thursday, our group decided to go out and take various photos to inspire us to create our title sequence. We all had different tasks, by this I mean that Omar and Aniela went out to Crouch end, Ossian road, Granville road, Stamford Hill to take various images of churches as that is what we plan on incorporating into our title sequence for Bible Belt.

Ersila visited Holloway to take various pictures of more churches and other images that will fit the title sequence well. Although this does not link directly to the theme of churches and religion, we as a group decided it would be a good idea to add images of alleyways and unkept doors as it would create an eerie atmosphere

41: Cinematic Details/Story Board

Storyboard of shots for the title sequence by Ersila Bushi

Powered by emaze
Above is a storyboard that the group will be following when filming our title sequence. However some of the shots will vary, this is because we are creating a discrete title sequence. By this I mean there would be atlas a hundred shots in the title sequence that will be on the screen for half a second or more, therefore I was unable to fit all shots in the story board due to the immense quantity of shots however it will follow the same story line as showed above.

Blog post 32: Finding a Distribution Company

A distribution company is responsible for many things to do with the film such as buying the rights of the film, selling as many prints as possible of the film to cinemas so the film can be exhibited as well as creating a successful marketing campaign in order to draw in a wider range of audiences.

Our film will include the codes and conventions of a psychological thriller and will therefore need to be distributed by a company which has sold films of that genre before. In order to decide which distribution company would be perfect for our film, I have decided to do some research into two films that are similar to ours in terms of genre, budget and cast.

Reservoir Dogs

The Blair Witch Project
Powered by emaze

Based on my research, I think the most suited distribution company for our independent, low budget film would be either Lionsgate Films or Artisan Entertainment.

This is because they are well known for distributing low budget thriller/horror films and so they will be perfect for our film.

5) Institutional Detail(Omar):

Here are some institutional details on our film!

Mainstream or Independent.
Our film will be an independent film. This is because our film wont be associated with any major company. The reasoning behind this is that major companies usually contain a huge budget and team(consisting of multiple actors, directors and film associates). They are also usually able to satisfy the demand of the market as they have a huge reach to the general public.
We are an independent company for the following reasons:
Our film will be created by a small group of people(in this case being 4) and we have a generally small budget.
We do not intend to market our product either meaning we do not have a market to satisfy

Who will distribute our film:

-After conducting the research seen in Blog Task 32, i decided that the best company to distribute a film like ours would be Lions gate Films. T
-The reason i have decided on this idea is because Lionsgate Films have released many films in the past that are similar to our genre. This means that since they have experience with our genre kind of movies, they would know how to market it to the right audience.
-For example, they have released thriller films such as the Saw franchise, Blair witch and American Psycho(NOTE: We are actually inspired by this film)

What other distribution companies are similar to yours?
*New line cinema would be a distribution company very similar to ours.
This is because they have released a ton of thriller movies in the past which would mean, just like    Lionsgate films, they have experience with managing the social reach and marketing.
*They would be able to ensure that the public would be able to identify the characteristics of the  genre the film is being marketed under.

Momentum pictures is another distribution company similar to ours. They are known as one of the top leading UK and Ireland distribution companies and have released movies such as; The Woman in black, Frozen and the Girl who played with fire.

Name some films that have been distributed like yours/if you were to make this a full feature film indicate why our distribution would be lit.
Films that have been distributed like ours would be American Psycho, Frozen, Black swan and  The butterfly affect. These films are all great as they made use of social media in order to gain a huge audience. They all made use of television ads for marketing and were featured in various newspapers/articles.
-If we were to make our film a full feature, the reason why our distribution company would be lit is:
As previously stated our company has experience with our film genre before. This means they know how to market our film in a way that would leave a positive impact on the audiences we are targeting. The thriller films our distribution company have released before have a similar demographic meaning we can reach out to a similar audience.

How would ownership affect the type of titles and credits you have.
-Ownership would affect the type of credits and titles we have as the distribution company would have more control over these things.
For example, if the movies Title Card/Title credit were to contain something that could offend a certain group of people then they would instruct us to change it-this happened with the title credits for Donnie Darko.
-Due to the distribution company being the one of the most important credits of a film, the order of the credits could be re arranged due to ownership changing the order of what credits are shown first. I.e, the distribution company would be shown first in the order of credits.

6) Audience detail(Omar):

In this blog post i will be discussing the audience detail for our film.

Core target audience?
Our core audience are men and women within the age range of 30-50's.
The reason we have decided to make this our core target audience is because after researching into target audiences on the website called you gov, we found out that movies similar to our film ranged from the same age group.
A typical audience member in our target audience would watch a lot of television. Enjoy movies that contain genres such as thriller and drama's.
Here is a picture of a typical member of our core target audience!
Wider Target audience?
Our wider target audience would be reaching out to people who aren't in our core audience.
An example of our wider target audience would be those who aren't typically interested in our genres. Other wider target audiences would be people who do not fit in our demographic or age range, such as teenagers.
Reaching to a wider target audience is crucial as it means more people will view our product!

How will you attract them to your film?
We will not be able to have a huge significant reach to all members of our target audience because we are independent. This means that we have a limited amount of marketing tools that we can use to attract our film to these audiences.
We can attract them by:
Making social media posts and posting them to different social groups that would attract different people, this would allow us to market it to audiences of different ages.
Another method would be asking people in the street if they would like our film idea, like we did in the interviews!

The photos below are examples of me collecting information on our wider target audience. As you can see i have collected information on those who are clearly within our demographic age range, and one who is not within our demographic to get different opinions!

Title credits (Diana) (36)

  • The title credits will be incorporated into moving images and will actively move with the actions happening in the images. Although this will take a lot of editing, it helps the audience notice and engage more with the title aspect of the sequence. It is also useful as it makes the title sequence seamless and put together.
  • There will also be a lot of overcraking and undercraking involved, which means the titles will have to be edited to the same pace of the moving images. This is effective as it will help the audience focus on specific shots and therefore specific title credits, which may be more important than others. An example of this is seen in the 'Taking of Pelham 123' title sequence where some scenes were in fast-motion and then slow-motion for focus, taking the titles with them.
  • The font of the text will be kept a simple typography as we want the main focus to be on the moving images  and the colour will be white as this will contrast the darkness of the scenes and therefore allow a more noticeable appearance of the credit titles.
  • Also we have decided to put the main actors name before the director. This is because we are assuming that he is a household name, who will bring a wider range of audience. Not only fans of psychological thrillers but also fans of the actor who may not necessarily enjoy thrillers, but would watch one if their favourite actor was in one. An example of this is in the 'Black Swan' where the name of Natalie Portman comes before the name of the director as she is a starring actress and therefore bringing recognition to the film, making a 'Natalie Portman film'.
  • The actual name of the film will appear after most of the other credits are given, in big letters and right in the middle. This is because this will help establish it's significance and stick in the minds of the audience.

40: Risk Assessment (Ersila)

Risk Assessment by Ersila Bushi

There are a variety of different risks and complications that may arise during the filming of our title sequence which will be during two days. In this post i will be stating and explain ing then various risks that may occur, as well as solutions to these problems and also precautions we will take to prevent this from occurring in the beginning.

Technical risks may occur during filming, this risks will eventually set our group back and therefore waste time therefore we need to find precautions so these issues never occur in the first. One of the complications that may occur is if one person has lost or damaged the camera and equipment, so much so that we are unable to use to the equiptment setting us back, as we would have to film at a later point, although this is unlikely, there still is a possibility of this occurring. Therefore to prevent this we will be collecting the equipment a day before we begin to film, this is the likeliness of this occurring decreases due to the fact it will be in our groups hands for much less time. Also we will give the responsibility of keeping the equipment to someone in our group that we find to be the most trustworthy and responsible. Another risk that may occur is if we do not have our props ready by the filming day, therefore we will create our pin boards days before filming, therefore when we are setting up to film we do not have to spend time creating our board by pinning countless images as we would have done that prior therefore we could spend that time filming. Also, there is a chance of us not knowing how to use the cameras properly, such as actually turning on the cameras, setting up the tripod, recording and packing the equiptment safely. To ensure this doesn't happen old the day so we don't waste time, our group has decided that we will either ask the technical team or our teachers how to successfully set and pack away the equipment as well as use on the week of filming to ensure we don't struggle and so we don't accidentally miss handle the equipment.

Also, there are errors that may occur due to simple misunderstanding and miscommunication as well as simple human errors. Such as, one of the risks that may occur is if our character does not arrive, maybe due to miscommunication or confusion. To combat this not only are we going to ask an actor who we trust to be on time and will know how to be professional (we will be asking friends that study drama) but we will notify them throughout the week in which the filming will take place to eliminate the chances of our actor not arriving as well as being late setting the whole group back.

Also, there may be problems that arise on the day of filming due to problems with travel. One of the problems that may arise are cancelled trains. There fore to minimise these risks it is best two check the train times on the day before leaving the house, also incase of a train cancelling it is best to know different routes to get to your destination, for example, I have three different routes in getting to college incase a train cancels. Also when travelling with equipment there is always a chance that the camera and equipment may fall or get damaged, therefore when taking a train or tube, it is best to stand behind the yellow line (though that is obvious) incase of anything falling.

Blog post 31: Final Ideas (Aniela)

Final Ideas - Aniela

After finalising our group's ideas, I created an emaze which summarises our ideas for the final title sequence as well as the plot of the film and a brief synopsis. In this emaze I also talk about other title sequences which have influenced us in the past and are also from the same genre.

Mise-en-scene - props, costumes and makeup (37) (Diana)

In this blog post, I will be discussing how our group will make use of Mise-en-scene such as props, costumes and makeup.

Props

  • A  Bible will be used by the main character in several shots to emphasise the importance of the theme of religion in the film. It will be incorporated with close-ups and extreme-close-ups of relevant quotes to help create the context for the film.
  •  newspaper articles and pictures are one of the most significant props used as they create the most context and inform the audience of the plot or storyline of the film. They are pictures of women who are essentially the 'victims' of our psychopath and therefore a major clue for the film.
  • Lastly, we will use an American flag or a pinned globe. This is incredibly significant as it establishes the location to some extent and also hints towards the cunningness and secrecy of our character.
  • Bracelets and other trinkets of victims.
  • pieces of hair from victims.

Costume

Our character will be wearing blue jeans, white shirts and most significantly a jacket with the confederate flag patch. The whole outfit is very basic, making him appear as an ordinary guy yet just that small detail of the patch reveals a aspect of his ideologies. Overall though, we don't want the audience to focus much on the clothing but mainly on the actions of the character and the pin board so we have kept the outfit minimal with the least amount of detail as possible.

Makeup

We want the main character to appear as ordinary and innocent and therefore his make-up will reflect that.  A flesh face and rose cheeks will reflect his lifestyle of exercise and hard work, making him blend in with others but at the same time he stands out as well taken care of. Lastly, the make-up will be used to make our character appear older than the actor's actual age. Our psychopath is in his early 20's however our actor is 16 so therefore, the make-up will play a crucial part in the character's appearance.

Mise-en-scene - location and setting (27) (Diana)

Location and setting

In this blog post I will be discussing the location and setting we have decided on regarding our title sequence filming.

Our group decided that we will shoot the title sequence mainly indoors (but outdoors is included as well) as the film is based in America and therefore we want to stray from locations which may suggest we are filming in London or any other place.  We are filming mainly in a house in Enfield, London however, our location in the film is based in southeast and south-central US, which is crucial for the production as the film is based on this region which is heavily influenced by 'evangelical protestantism'. Because of this location, a lot of context is already given in the title sequence even though it is a discrete sequence.

  • Therefore, the decided main setting of our group is a house garage. The appearance of the garage will be dark and abandoned, with tons of boxes and other rubbish, which indicates the main character wanting isolation and privacy, while also hinting towards the personality of the character.
  • We will also have shots of churches and church windows, which are located in Crouchend.
  • We will also have shots of our character walking down an alleyway, this being the outdoors element in the title sequence. The alleyway scenes will be filmed in Shoreditch, London somewhere between 5-7 for the purpose of it being dark while we are filming. This is important because the time of the character being outdoors suggests on the activities he takes part in and also the type of person he is.

30: Sound design

Sound Design, By Ersila Bushi

Here I have created a short, rough sound scape on garage band based on the type of sounds I would like to use in the title sequence. I have chosen strings, airways sounds, and orchestra music for the soundscape. This is because I feel that with these sounds incorporated this will create a more dramatic title sequence, also due to the calm, atmospheric music, this will create contrast with the images seen, which include images of the dead, crime scene photos etc.

There are a variety of different title sequence that inspired me to create this specific soundscape. One of the title sequences that influenced me the most is American Psycho. This is because I enjoyed the orchestra playing as it created a dramatic effect along with the images of red sauce or blood. Therefore I decided to use a similar sound for my soundscape to then give me a guide on the sounds for our groups title sequence. I also gained inspiration from the title sequence to SE7EN. This is because I liked the use of sound effects such as the sounds of scratches and other various sound effects. I believe that I will be able to incorporate this into our title sequence, such as various scratches and possibly faint screams in the backround for dramatic effect.

Non-Diegetic sounds

There are a variety of different non diegetic sounds that I am planning to incorporate into the title sequence. Also as the title of our movie is Bible Belt, it would be fitting for the background music to include the sounds of an organ playing, unfortunately, on GarageBand, the organ loops of music were not appropriate for the soundscape as it was too upbeat, hence the sounds of an orchestra and string instruments would be more fitting. We have decided that there will be non voice over, this is because we want our title sequence to be discrete, so we would want the audience to make their own judgments of what the plot may be about, therefore by having a voice over it would provide too much context

Diegetic sounds

Our group has decided that we do not want to have any dialogue in our title sequence based on the fact we have agreed we want our opening to be discrete therefore any dialogue would add to much context. Also this is because we want the audiences focus to be mainly on the fast cut scenes. We also want to incorporate ambient sound effects such as, when we shoot scenes in an alleyway, add sound effects such as police sirens to create a more dramatic effect. Our title sequence will alternate betweens scenes on the psychopath pinning images to scenes of him in an alleyway possibly picking up evidence such as traces of hair that we will later add on to his board. Foley sound is one of the devices our group would like to incorporate, more specifically, we wanted to enhance the sounds of images being pinned onto a wall and the sound of pages being flipped in the bible to create a dramatic effect, especially as the bible is a important aspect in the title sequence

4) Representation(Omar)

Representation(Omar):

'Text Transcript'
The first character that will be introduced in the title sequence will be the psychopath. This is because he is the main lead playing a important role throughout the title sequence.
The second group of characters we will introduce are the victims of the psychopath being females(blonde hair, blue eyes).
The final character we will introduce in our title sequence is the second lead being the Women who escapes.

Not many social groups are represented throughout our opening sequence.
The main social group that is presented throughout the entire opening is the women that the psycho path targets. Their social group would be 'general public' or 'bystanders' however they all end up becoming the victims of the psychopath. They will be represented as unguarded,

We decided to represent our characters in ways that suited them;
For the Psychopath we decided to conform the stereotypical features that one would contain. This would include features such as a clear lack of empathy with his work. Having a crazed obsession; this being women with blonde hair and blue eyes whilst having his "reasons"- in this case his reason would be practising the bible in an extremist way killing all 'witches'.
He would have a crazed amount of self-worth and making sure that all his findings are unambiguous and exact- we will present this through the use of a murder board.

The female victims were represented in a way that suited our psychopaths motives.
They would of course have blonde hair and blue eyes as this is how our psychopath identifies these "witches".
They are going to be portrayed as weak and vulnerable conforming to the stereotypical presentation of women in movies.

The second female lead will be represented in the way where she challenges the stereotypes.
This is because she provides a challenge for our male psychopath male lead. This means that she will be presented in the way where she is intelligent, is always one step ahead and is wary of her surroundings. This will contrast well against the other female victims because our main female lead will be smart and witty. Characters like this can be seen in movies such as Lucy or Kill Bill,

The companies which would distribute our film (32)

Since we are creating a title sequence for a psychological thriller film, the film would be distributed by a company which distributed a lot of thriller and drama films.
Some examples of companies which distribute thriller films and similar films, therefore, making them an appropriate distripution company for us are:

  • Momentum Pictures, with films such as The Girl Who Played with Fire and Season of The Witch
  • Kaleidoscope with films such as Taste of Fear and Out of The Shadows
  • Lionsgate Films with films such as Saw, American Psycho, Irréversible and Jessabelle.
Out of these companies, the most ones which are most likely to distribute our film would be Momentum Pictures and Lionsgate Films.
Lionsgate Films would be a more appropriate  distributor than Momentum Pictures as they are more experienced with psychological thrillers, whereas Momentum Pictures seem to have focused more or fictional thrillers and fantasy.

Blog Task 33: After effects ident

In this blog Task i have been asked to create an ident for our short title sequence.
NOTE: This is only a test and is not the final version.

I have created a distribution ident. The reason i have created this ident is to practice my skills with\

adobe after effects and see what kind of distribution ident i would like to use.
I created the ident itself by going on the website Online logo maker
The tricky part was trying to be original. Despite this only being a test, i wanted to be somewhat original in terms of how my logo looked. I finally decided on the logo seen in the after effects ident test.
The name of my entertainment company was another issue. I had to try and be as original as i wanted to be, i then came up with "Watch our film please".

After finishing the creating of my ident i looked through a bunch of ready made ident templates that were provided by our school. There were over 10 available making picking one very difficult. However, after looking through all of them i decided to chose the one shown in the video below. My reasons for this were that i found it very visually appealing and it worked well with the colour scheme i had decided on.
I used adobe after effects to swap the stock template image provided with my logo. After doing so, i produced it and the following ident was finally finished.

In my opinion, for a first ident i believe it was pretty nice!

Blog Task 32: Which companies would distribute our film

The film industry works in different ways.
An example would be those who distribute certain films, certain companies distribute different films depending on their genre. The movie distribution company Marvel Studios would only distribute movies that fit in their general audience or genres i.e Superhero, SCI-FI and action.

My group have decided that our title sequence would be one of a psychological thriller. This would mean that companies that distribute films under the genres of thriller, drama and psycho would distribute our title sequence.

Below i have created an emaze that will present the companies i believe would distribute our film!

33: After effects indent

Creating my own indent

Below I have made after effects indent that I may use for my title sequence. I did this so i can gain experience in creating indents later on when I produce my title sequence if I chose to not use this indent.

I did this by initially logging into a website that allows me to create my own logos, I chose a simple symbol that consisted of three blocks at different heights, this is so it is easily recognisable due to its simplicity. I named my distribution company by going on to a random name generator, i then found the name Domil, in which i then used for my indent as 'Domil Production'. I then downloaded the logo onto my desktop to then import onto Adobe After Effects and inserted my logo onto a template found on the school files. I chose this template as i felt it would suit the idea for my title sequence the most, this is due to the dramatic effect from the the ring of fire surrounding the logo.

Blog post 33: After Effects Ident

For this blog task we were asked to practice making an Ident in After Effects for the distribution company of our film. Firstly, we created a logo in Online Logo Maker and then picked an After Effects template to fit our logo into. I chose to create a logo with a dark, red colour scheme considering the genre of our film (psychological thriller). This is because red is often associated with blood, horror and violence which are all elements that we will incorporate into our film. I use a random name generator to create the name of the distribution company.

After creating the logo, I picked the "Glitch" After Effects template because of how mysterious it looks and how fitting it is to the psychological aspect of our film. However, the colour scheme for the template doesn't really match the logo as the template is more centred around blues, greys and whites and towards the end it starts to fade into a red/black. Because of this element, we will probably not be using my ident although we will take ideas and inspirations from it for our final product.

distribution company Logo (33)

Here I have created a logo for a distribution company using the application 'After Effect'.

Blog post 28: Audience Profile

Here is an ideal audience profile for our film as it is a psychological thriller and is likely to attract this type of audience:

Final ideas brainstorm

Final ideas presented on mindmeister

This is a brain storm of our final ideas compressed into a mindmeister. We have decided to go down the route of a psychological thriller therefore we have followed the conventions associated with the specific genre. These include a psychopath as the main character showing the audience psychotic and impulsive characteristics. Our title sequence will be discrete however we will include jump shot of clues and hints about our characters personality therefore creating context so our audience can generate their own ideas.

Preferred genre for title sequence

Preferred Genre

In this blog post I will be creating my own shortlist for my preferred genres that i may use for my own title sequence which I will later on create with my group, I will then be explaining why i would like to work in this genre.

The genres I would like to work in include, drama, thriller, crime. Movies that I most enjoy fall within these genres such as Pain & Gain, The Shawshank redemption, The Godfather.

Personally, I would want the title sequence to go down the route of psychological/thrillers. Not only is this because my favourite movie falls within this genre, but also because I feel that this would also allow me to be more creative when producing the title sequence as I can attempt to produce a piece which will allow the audience to be intrigued in the characters mental state due to the use of quick shots that may include hints and clues in how the character thinks, this will then create context and will allow the audience to make their own judgements on the characters state of mind as well as suspending disbelief within the audience.

Films such as SE7EN have become so successful, partly due to the fact its title sequence caught the attention of millions as the creator of the title sequence has been credited as the man who single handily revitalised the main title sequence. I personally like the title sequence so much so that i have taken inspiration, the use of quick shots and cut ins is something that I will incorporate in my title sequence, also as I am doing  psychological thriller, I want my title sequence to portray the mind set of the main character therefore i can make sure that the quick shots and cut ins do not have a smooth transition as the characters mind set should be confused, obsessive and psychotic therefore his/her therefore it would be useless to have a smooth and ordered sequence.

Also, I've noticed that the thriller genre tends to be fairly popular with the uk audience (generating 2.9% of the box office and making £34.9 million in 2015) however I do believe it could be more popular with the audience and catch up to the popularity of the action and animation genre, so by creating a psychological thriller I will be highlighting to my audience why psychological thrillers are so entertaining and addictive, although i notice that my title sequence won't make a difference to the box office, i believe that if I change someones mind on the thriller genre, so much so that they pay too go see a thriller that will enough satisfaction.

32: Finding a distribution company

Distribution companies for my psychological thriller title sequence

My group has decided to go down the route of creating a psychological thriller title sequence, therefore this would mean that the companies that would distribute our film would be one that is familiar with this genre. This is common in the film industry, explaining why Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute mostly family and animation films.

Blog Post 26: 6 Minute Film Challenge

The Adventures of Jigda-Khatun

The 6 minute movie challenge involved our group having to create a film idea in 6 minutes and combining our ideas for films. This is Ersila explaining the general plot of the film we came up with using the location (a tube on the Victoria Line), prop (a golf club) and the random Wikipedia article we were given.

The genre for the film we created would probably be a fiction comedy/adventure as it involves time travel and unrealistic aspects. It is first set in the Georgian era and then moves to modern day as the character travels in a time machine.

STORY BOARD

Here, my group and i have created a story board for the begging of our movie plot that we created within 6 minutes, in which we title The Adventures of Jidda-Khatun. We have also listed the shot types below in the text box.

In the first shot, our group decided for the movie to begin with a extreme wide shot to establish the setting and create context, we also agreed on the sound of the first shot to include the singing of birds as well as the sounds of people talking possibly from a nearby market, this makes the shot appear as normal and authentic as possible. In the next shot we agreed we wanted the audience to see the husband of Jigda-Khatun (Jidda-Khatun was th first wife of a Georgian King, she was also childless which was frowned upon). We wanted the husband to be seen consoling his wife as she is crying due to the fact she can't have a baby, therefore the audience will be able to hear the wife crying. In the next shot we didn't want there to be much sound, but instead the sound of her sighing and breathing heavy to the thought of her not being able to have a child whilst she looks into the mirror, the sound of her sighing and crying will show he audience that she is distraught therefore creating context. In the 4th shot we wanted here to be little sound as she walks around to find he noble, hoping that he has the answers to fix her unfortunate situation, therefore by having no dialogue nor any load music in the background we are hoping that this would create anticipation within the audience as they may be wondering and thinking if he has any solutions. In the 5th shot we would introduce dialogue between the Georgian noble and Jidda-Khatun whilst using a over the shoulder shot to intoduce a wider variety of shot types. Finally in then last shot we would also have more dialogue between the two, this includes Jidda asking what is IVF and the noble explaining that she can travel to the year 2016 an receive IVF, followed by the sound of Jidda-Khatun's sound of excitement (gasping whilst hearing the news).

Research onto the effects of sound

Sound Analysis

In this blog post I will be analysing the sound of the title sequence from my favourite film Pain & Gain, which i have already analysed in a past blog, however in this post i will be analysing the scene deeper, more specifically the sound devices used.

 Diegetic sound devices
- In this opening scene, there is no dialogue presented, this may be due to the fact that the director may of wanted the main focus to be towards the action scenes which consisted of Mark Wahlberg trying to escape from the police, therefore by having dialogue there may be too much context in the title sequence giving too much information to the audience which is not ideal.

One of the sound devices which is includes is ambient sound effects (which are background sounds which are present in a scene or location), this includes police sirens, this creates context as it shows the audience that the main character is involved in criminal activity that will later be exposed as the plot unravels, also due to the fact that there is no dialogue, it allows the audience to create their own ideas of what may be happening as well as the fact that the ambient sound effects exposes the genre of the film, in this case it would be crime.

Foley sound is one other device that is included in the title sequence. Foley sound is the reproduction of everyday sound effects added to a film to enhance audio quality. When police officers are leaving their cars you are able to hear them shout at one another, possibly ordering eachothwr of wear to go as mark is on the run, however the audience is unable to unravel what they are saying. This is effective as it suspends belief as the audience will feel as they are included in the movie due to the use of ordinary sounds such as the sound of policemen creating a realistic and authentic scene. Also, the sound of Mark Wahlberg running into the sheets on a drying line is enhanced and added into the scene, again, making the scene seem more authentic as well as exaggerating the speed in which Mark is running, hence the loud sounds of him running through the sheets. Another everyday sound that is added is the sound of Mark running, more specifically, the sound of him running on the concrete, by this I mean that usually the sound of someone running will not be as audible as compared to this specific title sequence, hence creating a more authentic scene as well as exaggerating the speed of Mark Wahlberg. Also, at 1:09, there seems to be the sound of Mark falling into the skip being enhanced, this may be to exaggerate the intensity of the fall, which is effective as the genre of this film is action therefore most scenes will be exaggerated.

Wild sound is another sound device used in the title sequence. Wild sound is the audio that is intended to be matched up with visual images but made separately. In this case, the wild sound included is the sound of weights as the title of the film appears. This is effective as it creates context as later on in the film the audience will discover that the main characters are fitness instructors hence tying the movie together. Also as the title appears, it creates a dramatic effect as it makes the title appear as if the title is a weight itself. This sound is also accompanied by the sound of someone grunting, as if they are exercising themselves, again, creating context, at this point the audience can make judgements that the movie may consist of a storyline which includes fitness.

Non-Diegetic sound devices

What genre signifiers are used in the sound?
- There is a slow paced song played by a variety of instruments such as either a  cello/string instrument, this creates a dramatic effect as the instruments have a heavy bass. Also the use of ambient sound effects (police sirens) are an immedient signifier of the genre as they are commonly accosted with the crime genre/drama genre.

How is atmosphere and tone creates? Does it match the images?
- Atmosphere and tone is created through the use of background music, but what especially establishes the tone and atmosphere is that the slow paces song is integrated with the images seen as a large portion of the scene is in slow motion tying the scene together, resulting in the images and sound matching with each other.

How is the location established through the sound?
- Due to the sounds of sirens the audience may create their own ideas of the setting of the movie, however the most popular idea may be the fact that the setting would be in a fairly busy area, or a suburb rather than the countryside as the idea of criminal activity is not generalised with the quiet location of the country side. Also there are more subtle hints of how the location is established, this includes the sound of the main character running. This is because you are able to hear the sounds of him running on concrete, a hard surface, a material that is not commonly used in the countryside or farmland, as if it was set in the country side you would more likely expect to hear the sound of him running on grass or on a softer surface such as mud or soil.

Are there any sound motifs used for characters to locations?
- There is not many included in the scene apart from the sound of glass shattering once he hits the wind screen. However this is still effective as it shows the audience the characters urgency to leave the scene, this may generalise ideas that the character may be involved in criminal activity as he is so desperate to run away, so much so that he does not realise a car is coming towards him resulting in him being hit by a car. Also the most noticeable sound motif - the police sirens.

Blog Task 25: Head On Activity.

In this blog, i have decided to create a mind map.
This mind map allows you to get an insight on what kind of films have left an effect on me, why they have and what they did in order to leave such a impact on me as a viewer.

Thanks for watching, hopefully you have got an understanding on what genres in film were effective on me.

Health check Feedback (No.1) (23)

To improve my grade, I will make sure to stay consistent with posting frequently over a couple of days. This will enable me to stay on track with the tasks to complete and make sure the quality of work stays consistent rather than rushed.
I will also make sure to use various ICT and presentation programmes to create a more interesting and engaging blog such as Emaze,  prezi, slidebean, etc.
Furthermore, I will make sure to have my posts in order and separate each one to ensure an organised and well arranged appearance for my blog. This will make it easier for me to look back at my posts and find specific ones when I'm trying to improve them and it will also insure an easy access of all my blog posts for the examiner.

Blog Task 23: Feedback Review

In this blog task i will be reviewing the feedback that i was presented.

The feedback generally gives me an insight on what i have done right so far and what my strengths are. However, it also provides me with criticism, as means for me to improve, review my old blogs and try and fix what the issues that persist are in order to achieve a higher grade.

As seen in the screenshot above, my work has been reviewed by my teacher Mary.

The positives that exist are the following below:
-The effort that exists in the posts is strong throughout all of them
-There is a variety of different technology, it is multimedia allowing viewers to get different ways of maintaining information.
-The notes that have been included in the blog generally are correct which makes it clear and fluent.

*This was something i was very happy to hear, i spent time ensuring that i was not using only one media type such as youtube through out every post, i wanted to use different kinds of media - despite them usually being the same throughout all of the posts i.e prezi.

*I'm glad to hear that the effort i put in my posts has been acknowledged as i spent time on all of them ensuring that they were coherent and detailed- this goes for the notes i included as well.

The criticisms are the following:

Blog task 8 is are missing images which lack the ability to be easily understood.
Blog task 10 - the tile has not been spelt correctly.
Blog task 13 - requires extensive primary research in order to get top marks.

*I agree with the images that are missing in Blog Task 8, it makes it a bit harder to understand as images are generally able to make a detailed post more easy to understand.
It also shows evidence of research.

*Blog Task 10 and other blog tasks need to have correct titles in order for the idea of fluent and correctness to flow throughout my entire blog.

*The extensive primary research for blog task 10 would benefit me a lot, it would allow me to get a better insight on what film openings are really important and why. This would help me with post production to our actual media film later on in the a level and blog.

Targets:The targets that she has listed were previously mentioned, however i will point them out as she did in order for me to refer to it later and check upon;
1) Use alternative technologies e.g padlet, powtoon, thinglink etc - there's a long list of ideas on the portfolio homepage to inspire me.

2) Address the small issues i detailed in the feedback for blogs : 8,10,13.

3) Aim for top A Grade

I have taken all of these on board, especially the last point. I'd like to achieve an A grade so i will do the following in order to achieve the final A grade.

Updates:
1)The images have been added to the title sequence; this was an error that occured when my embedded code was not working properly.

2) I fixed the title!
