Group 8
The blog
I will be analysing Ellie's, Lola's, Natalya's and Niamh's title sequence as I thought that it was very well made and fit the conventions of a typical highschool drama very well.
The title sequence opens by introducing the production as well as the distribution company and has multiple title credits running throughout the whole thing. It also includes a number of wide and extreme wide shots to establish the setting on the title sequence, in this case it's a college. This is a common convention of the genre of the product that they produced as it makes it clear to the audience that the majority of the film will be about college life. The title sequence also uses close ups to introduce each main character to the audience and establish the status of each character in the group, which is followed by a medium close up of the group over all. Nearer to the end of the sequence, a two shot is used between the girl and the boy to show that the characters have/ will have some sort of relationship during the film.
The music edited into the background of the footage is effective as it sets a specific rhythm for the special effect of slow motion used throughout the product. The actors step in time to the music to make the title sequence flow and appear seamless. The only dialogue in the title sequence is the voice over which is spoken by the main actress and character. It is effective as it adds insight into the story of the film and makes the relationship between the actors much clearer to the audience. Several editing techniques such as match cuts are used throughout, for example when the actresses are walking down the street to, again make the footage look realistic and seamless. Slow motion is used to enabled the audience to grab each detail of the sequence like the actor's faces as well as the props (e.g. the phone).
The lighting used in the title sequence is bright and well-lit, making the product seem quite light hearted and ordinary. Overall, I think that this title sequence could easily be the opening to a film as it includes multiple codes and conventions of the genre of teenage high-school drama, such as the fact that there are different cliques. It also resembles the film ''Mean Girls'' since there is a group of popular girls who everyone aspires to be.
