30: Sound design

Sound Design, By Ersila Bushi

Here I have created a short, rough sound scape on garage band based on the type of sounds I would like to use in the title sequence. I have chosen strings, airways sounds, and orchestra music for the soundscape. This is because I feel that with these sounds incorporated this will create a more dramatic title sequence, also due to the calm, atmospheric music, this will create contrast with the images seen, which include images of the dead, crime scene photos etc.

There are a variety of different title sequence that inspired me to create this specific soundscape. One of the title sequences that influenced me the most is American Psycho. This is because I enjoyed the orchestra playing as it created a dramatic effect along with the images of red sauce or blood. Therefore I decided to use a similar sound for my soundscape to then give me a guide on the sounds for our groups title sequence. I also gained inspiration from the title sequence to SE7EN. This is because I liked the use of sound effects such as the sounds of scratches and other various sound effects. I believe that I will be able to incorporate this into our title sequence, such as various scratches and possibly faint screams in the backround for dramatic effect.

Non-Diegetic sounds

There are a variety of different non diegetic sounds that I am planning to incorporate into the title sequence. Also as the title of our movie is Bible Belt, it would be fitting for the background music to include the sounds of an organ playing, unfortunately, on GarageBand, the organ loops of music were not appropriate for the soundscape as it was too upbeat, hence the sounds of an orchestra and string instruments would be more fitting. We have decided that there will be non voice over, this is because we want our title sequence to be discrete, so we would want the audience to make their own judgments of what the plot may be about, therefore by having a voice over it would provide too much context

Diegetic sounds

Our group has decided that we do not want to have any dialogue in our title sequence based on the fact we have agreed we want our opening to be discrete therefore any dialogue would add to much context. Also this is because we want the audiences focus to be mainly on the fast cut scenes. We also want to incorporate ambient sound effects such as, when we shoot scenes in an alleyway, add sound effects such as police sirens to create a more dramatic effect. Our title sequence will alternate betweens scenes on the psychopath pinning images to scenes of him in an alleyway possibly picking up evidence such as traces of hair that we will later add on to his board. Foley sound is one of the devices our group would like to incorporate, more specifically, we wanted to enhance the sounds of images being pinned onto a wall and the sound of pages being flipped in the bible to create a dramatic effect, especially as the bible is a important aspect in the title sequence
